WHAT IS WOODCUT?

Woodcut is the oldest and in many ways the simplest of the autographic processes. In order to make a woodcut printmaking, they would first cut different shapes of flowers, birds and animals in various forms and positions with the outmost skill and precision on a solid and sturdy wood block with a knife or gouge, and then they would use these blocks to do the printing from the inked relief surface.

Woodcut printmaking is the oldest method of printing in the world. It was first used in China, then in Japan and since 19th century in Europe. Artists like Gaughen and Edward Monech have innovated and improved the methods. In Iran the history of this technique goes back to 16th century. It was used as stamp or symbols and later in picture books. For centuries, it has been used by many artists to express their creativity.
